High-speed turret press improves productivity

Sheetmetal engineering firm AE Tilley in Wellington, New Zealand, has upgraded its capabilities with the purchase of a 30 tonne high-speed turret punch press.

The Muratec Vectrum-3000a series is claimed to be up to four times faster than AE Tilley's other machines.

Daryl Peters, IT manager of AE Tilley, comments that this is a major investment for his company and represents a significant improvement in technology for them as it increases their capacity, ensures backup capacity and the upgraded associated software and computers enables the company to upgrade all of its turret punch presses (all purchased from Muratec) and reduce lead times for its clients.

The Vectrum is a servo hydraulic ram CNC turret punch press which features a servo hydraulic system that allows the operator to set the desired punching speed and positioning of the ram for greater punching control. This ensures accurate, high quality punching while ram speed is controlled within one ram stroke to achieve optimum reduction in noise and vibration.

Punching can be done under optimum conditions, selecting the tool parameters based on material and sheet thickness being used. The technological innovation is claimed to give higher productivity compared with conventional hydraulic machines on the market. Daryl Peters comments that by combining multiple products, possibly from several customers, of the same material and thickness rather than blanking the sheet to the smaller sizes and also by quickly nesting items together, they can eliminate two processes from their current way of doing things. The new press takes a 2 x 1.5 m sheet as standard although it can accommodate longer.
